The Effect of Weight Control Program on Body Weight, and Knowledge and Attitude about Exercise and Diet of Psychiatric Inpatients

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of weight control program on body weight, and
knowledge and attitude about exercise and diet for psychiatric inpatients.

Method: A quasi-experimental design with non-equivalant control gorup was used. The subjects included 34 patient with mental illness, 17 in experimental group, and 17 in the control group. The program consisted of diet therapy, exercise and behavior modification. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and body weight scale over a 6 weeks period.

Results: Knowledge and attitude about exercise, and dietary knowledge were increased significantly in the experimental group, compared to the control group. However, body weight and attitude regarding diet weren¡¯t significantly changed in the experimental group, compared to the control group.

Conclusion: This study provides evidence for the potential and beneficial effect of weight control program for psychiatric inpatients.
